Seventh person arrested over Corkman's murder

Following the arrests of six people yesterday, a seventh man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Corkman Gerard ‘Topper’ Staunton last year.

A SEVENTH MAN has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the activities of dissident republicans and the murder of a man in Cork last year.

The latest person to be arrested, a 53-year-old man, was apprehended last night in Ballinlough at about 10pm. He was questioned by gardaí in Mayfield garda station, and held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Six people were arrested yesterday in connection with the killing of convicted drug dealer Gerard ‘Topper’ Staunton in Cork in Jan 2010, which occurred in Cork city in front of his family. The six were arrested in an early morning raid during which gardaí say they seized a quantity of ammunition, phones, documentation and computers.

Gerard ‘Topper’ Stanton was killed in front of his wife and two children, who were both under five years of age, outside his home at Westlawn, Wilton in Cork city 20 January 2010. Dissident republicans claimed responsibility for the murder.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information in relation to the murder to contact Togher Garda Station on 021 – 4947120 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
