13-year-old dies after swimming accident

Ricky Oasagi got into difficulty at around 6.15pm yesterday and passed away overnight.

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy has died following a swimming accident in Blanchardstown.

Ricky Oasagi is believed to have gotten into difficulty after helping two girls at a water feature in Waterville Park, Blanchardstown.

He was taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital last night, but has since passed away.

Ricky was a popular member of the local football team, Corduff FC.

Corduff FC PRO John McGuinness told TheJournal.ie that the whole club is in shock.

“We’re shocked and obviously very upset because Ricky was a terrible, terrible nice kid.

“He had played with the club since under-8s and was about to go under-14s. He was really very talented and had been given man of the match awards in cup finals the last two years.

“He was being scouted by a number of clubs.”

McGuinness said that a number of children had witnessed the incident and that they were all “absolutely shocked”.

The club posted a Facebook status paying tribute to the teenager.

“We all know each other in the club, however everyone knew Ricky on and off the pitch – be it his fancy hair styles, his shimmy dance after scoring goals or just his all round cheerful, confident personality. He was a seriously gifted footballer.

“Our condolences to Ricky’s family, relatives, friends and to his team mates and manager and coach here in Corduff FC.”

The two girls are said to be in a stable condition.
