Man dies after shooting on grounds of Limerick hospital

Foul play is not suspected.

GARDAÍ DO NOT suspect foul play after the body of a man was discovered at the University Hospital Limerick Chapel.

The man, aged in his 70s, and from a Limerick suburb, was found with gunshot wounds to his chest inside the hospital church. The deceased was found by a member of the public who entered the chapel around 3pm.
A firearm was also discovered at the church near the man’s body, sources said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s understood the man had been receiving treatment for a serious condition at the hospital.

Detectives were gathering CCTV from security cameras at the hospital as part of their investigation, and a Garda forensic examination of the scene was carried out.

A spokesperson for UHL said the incident was a matter for the gardaí and that the hospital would not be making any comment.

Gardaí described the incident as a tragedy and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the man’s death.
