'Deeply disappointing': Carlow shop gutted by fire after car crashes into it overnight

The incident happened at around 2.30am on Tullow Street.

LAST UPDATE | 8 Apr

A STORE IN Carlow has been “significantly damaged” after a car crashed into it and a fire broke out overnight.

Gardaí said they are now investigating an incident of criminal damage.

The incident happened at around 2.30am after a car collided with the front of the store, a tanning salon, on Tullow Street.

A fire broke out and fire services attended the scene to control the blaze.

Significant damage was caused to the property. It’s understood the business moved into the building just a few weeks ago.

No injuries have been reported, gardaí said.

Speaking to The Journal, local Fianna Fáil councillor Fintan Phelan said it is “deeply disappointing” that such an incident has happened.

He said Carlow Town is a “fantastic place”.

“To see an incident such as this in the heart of our town is deeply disappointing,” Phelan said.

“I would encourage anyone with information to contact the local gardaí who will be conducting a full investigation,” he said.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Carlow Garda Station 059 913 66220.

Investigations are ongoing.
