Some shops have turned their focus to online sales, but that’s not a route all businesses can take and thousands of jobs have already been lost around the country.
Cafes and restaurants have been particularly quick to pivot away from table service to takeaway. Some cafes – if they’re not staying open – have focused on the sale and delivery of coffee beans to customers, while many restaurants have also stepped up deliveries.
Will you be making an effort to help your local shops out?

I do shop locally, I live next door to Tesco
I would if everything wasn’t 30% more expensive that Lidl or Aldi…..
I will still have to go to multiple shops, not because I want to but because of whats termed as “severe” multiple food allergies. In the best of times shops do not always have all their allergy foods in stock so this is normal for me and my family. They will be local but it will be 2 at a bare minimum.
This is because I unfortunately cannot take the risk of someone else checking for all the ingredients we cannot eat, the last thing our local hospital needs now is me (or anyone) eating an allergen and ending up in A&E on oxygen, adrenaline and steroids.
This is not a complaint or whining, just a weekly reality for a number of families and like for everyone else its exacerbated by Covid-19.
Please be considerate of others when shopping, as well as not stock-pilling, if a food / drink is Free From or Other (for example Non-Dairy) and you like it but it is not a dietary necessity please consider an alternative you have a choice others don’t.

Ill try not to go out if possible. Can order online or by phone if need be. Local shops and butchers are now doing this.
@Dave Barrett: we tried to shop online from local SuperValu, it has no delivery slots left for the next 8 days, same for click and collect.
@Dave Barrett: Had a look in Tesco. No delivery slots for nearly 2 weeks.
@Aidan Finn: yes , and half the items I wanted to order are not available , just ordinary day to day stuff ,and I’m not panic buying.
Definitely trying to support my local businesses. I am very lucky as a social care worker that I am still in work so I have purchased some gift vouchers from local beauty salon, ordered some summer bits for my daughter from local shops online to try to give back to those so badly affected by Covid_19

How about asking if people are modifying their shopping habit – at this stage ONE member of a unit (family, etc) should be doing ONE weekly shop in ONE supermarket.
Yes because I can’t get a slot for online delivery.
Lidl and Supervalu in walking distance and a Tesco not too far away either, no need for me to change habits

Mulcahys butchers, mastersons fruit and vegetables, Elite bakery all in maynooth !
I like to shop local, oh wait, everything is closed, not even the local Chinese delivery is open. Shops closed, cafes all closed even if they just did takeout only. Tesco is open, but no stock and jammed with people wandering around like zombies.
10.7% of the voters don’t give a shot about anybody except their sorry selves. (I’m presuming they have a choice)

I have a local Tesco, Dunnes, Aldi and Lidl – so yeah…I won’t be driving to Portarlington to shop!
No, I’m going to a street market in Lombardy.
I like to support local shops. That’s why I shop in Tesco Metro.
