Sicilian airport remains closed after jet lands off runway

Thirty passengers injured after plane lands on tarmac during heavy rain.

SICILY’S PALERMO AIRPORT remains closed after a plane landed off a runway late last night. Thirty passengers suffered injuries after the plane botched its landing during heavy rain.

The plane, belonging to low-cost airline Wind Jet, was flying in from Rome and landed on the tarmac between the two runways at the airport.

Most flights going to Palermo have been diverted to Catania or Trapani as officials await the arrival of equipment to remove the plane, but Alitalia have canceled some flights to Palermo.

The landing is currently being investigated, and Palermo airport will remain closed until at least this evening.
