Six arrested as Welsh fan dies before match against England

The incident did not involve England fans and is not believed to be related to inter-club rivalry.

SIX PEOPLE HAVE been arrested after a Welsh fan died prior to his country’s Euro 2012 qualifier with England at Wembley last night.

The 44-year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries after suffering a cardiac arrest outside the stadium last night, the Guardian reports.

The six men arrested were Wales fans and police do not believe that any England fans were involved in the incident.

Cardiff City Football Club confirmed the man was a supporter of the club but said in a statement that no statements would be made at this point: “Late on Tuesday night details reached us concerning a tragedy where a Wales and Cardiff City supporter died at the match between England and Wales.

“Out of respect for the family of the supporter, the sensitivity of the situation and until full details and circumstances are ascertained, no statements will be made until deemed fit by proper channels.”

Emergency services were called to the area at around 7.20pm following reports of an assault and staff on standby at the scene were there within three minutes, according to a spokesman for the London Ambulance Service.

The man was pronounced dead at 8.50pm after he was taken to a hospital in north London. A post mortem is expected today and the Metropolitan Police’s Homocide and Serious Crime Command unit is investigating, BBC News reports.

Inter-club rivalry is not believed to be behind the incident.

England won the game 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from Ashley Young.
