Most young adults would sacrifice their TV and laptop ahead of their smartphone

A survey from O2 Media found that 70 per cent of respondents say their smartphone is their “first or most important screen.”

FOUR OUT OF five 18-34 year olds would rather get rid of their TV, laptop and tablet first before their smartphone, new research has found.

Research from O2 Media – which looked at Irish people’s relationships with their devices on a day-to-day basis – found that 70 per cent of respondents say their smartphone is their “first or most important screen.”

This figure rose to 78% when looking at the 18-34 year old demographic.

This is reflected in the amount of time people spend on their phones as 68 per cent of 18 -34 year olds said they use it the most when interacting online while 73 per cent use their smartphones more than PC, TV, or tablets.

Another major development is the amount of time people will spend looking at their smartphone while watching TV. 57 per cent of 18-34 year olds would spend the same amount of time or more on their smartphone while watching TV, and this figure falls to 49 per cent when considering all respondents.

The managing director of O2 Media, Fintan Lonergan, said that the survey shows “just how far smartphone usage has penetrated the market, becoming the ‘first screen’ for the majority over a relatively short space of time.”

However, one area that smartphones are still catching up on is online opping. Only 16 per cent of 18-34 year olds use their smartphone to purchase goods with the majority doing their shopping through their PC.

Couldn’t part with my phone! On a side note, are there any real people left on the Journal? It’s been a while but everyone seems to have been replaced by polar bears and other dodgy pseudonyms :)

I’m thinking of going back to a dumbphone. Waste too much time on this bloddy thing.

I dont have a TV and my laptop packed up last month but I wouldnt ever give up the desktop computer with a decent size screen and keyboard, fast processor and a decent OS

As a non Smartphone user (Nokia 6230i Phone….why the “i”? Did Nokia see that Apple were going to bring out an iPhone?) since Summer 2006 I don’t get the attraction of Smartphones.

Being able to access the Internet on the go has its’ benefits of course yes and GPS Tracking can be a life-saver but that aside do we need to be connected 24/7?

Do we really need Twitter, Facebook, Google etc. on the go?

Whatever happened to say using a map or, asking for directions, asking a question instead of resorting to the internet to seek advice when out buying a packet of bog-roll?

It’s killing communication on public transport too. Gone are the days you could sit down on the Trams or the Choo Choos and chat a young wan up cos they’ve all got their’ heads buried in these new fangled I-Pad yokes and Tablets and listening to their’ I-Pods!

Give me a wireless with a set of AA Batteries anyday or a Sony Walkman and a few Cassette Tapes (remember them kids!) anyday!

Well that doesn’t surprise me for the reason that you can watch TV on your smartphone and they can do many things that a laptop can do. Making documents, skyping, playing games etc.

Riding? Would they give up riding for a Smartphone? In which case the whole procreation and reproduction thing could get complicated if they’re insistent on hanging onto their’ Smartphone.

I’d give up the smartphone if I could have a ‘dumb’ phone with wifi tethering, then I’d carry some small tablet like an ipad mini or similar. But in the end I’d be losing on stuff I can do, so I would only do this if i was forced to drop the smartphone. Not sure why that’d happen though :P
