SmartThings beats major competition to take Web Summit startup award

A major coup for the company, the award comes with a €100,000 prize.

A PRODUCT WHICH allows a user to control their air conditions, lock their doors and monitor their pets from their smartphone has been given the approval of some of the heavyweights of the tech industry.

SmartThings was named the winner of the Electric Ireland Spark Genius Award at this year’s Web Summit in Dublin today.

Shortlisted with three others from an original entry list of more than 1,000 startups, the young business was chosen by a panel of international investors and industry experts.

As well as the €100,000 prize fund, the win also gives the firm a platform to pitch its products to top investors and media.

Founder of the Dublin Web Summit Paddy Cosgrave said that last year’s winner Redeem & Get has gone on to enjoy “huge success with a launch to a global audience”.

“The last two days have been an amazing opportunity for emerging companies to showcase their products to some of Europe’s leading technology figures,” he continued.

Altogether, 260 leading technology startups from Ireland and abroad have been highlighted at the summit.
