AN ESTIMATED 100 temporary construction jobs are to be created in Waterford by a social housing development in a building which used to be a seminary.
The €12 million project will see the 19th century building developed into 21 self-contained apartments for older people, along with a supporting day centre.
A development of 36 one-bed apartments for older people will be build on a site directly adjacent.
The seminary, St John’s College, was bought by housing charity Respond! from the diocese of Waterford and Lismore in 2007. It has spent several years preparing the collge for development.
Fr Patrick Cogan, a Franciscan priest based in Waterford who is CEO of Respond! said that the charity will “work very closely with the city council to assess all applications from prospective residents as the construction comes to a finish towards the end of 2015″.
There are some 300 applicants currently on the local authority list in Waterford.
Work is due to begin on the site after Christmas.
