South Carolina governor to endorse Mitt Romney

The endorsement of Nikki Haley will provide Romney with a significant boost in the State, where his rival Ndewt Gingrich is currently leading in thepolls.

SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR Nikki Haley plans to endorse Mitt Romney’s presidential bid.

A Republican with knowledge of the endorsement disclosed the plan ahead of the official announcement on condition of anonymity.

Haley, the first female Governor of South Carolina, is a rising star within the GOP and her endorsement in the first-in-the South primary state has been sought by many other presidential contenders.

Former US House of Representative speaker Newt Gingrich currently holds a lead in the State’s polls – so Haley’s endorsement is expected to give Romney’s campaign a significant boost, Reuters reports.

Haley was elected in 2010 after Sarah Palin strongly backed her campaign.

Romney plans to fly to South Carolina on Friday afternoon.

Politico first reported the Haley endorsement.
