Spanish baggage handlers call off 24-hour strikes

Decision not to strike has averted air travel chaos for an estimated 2 million passengers.

SPANISH BAGGAGE handlers have called off two strikes which were planned for later this month in protest over the dismissal of four colleagues.

The AFP reports that the first of the strikes, which could have caused major air travel disruptions, would have coincided with the pope’s official visit to Spain next week. Pope Benedict is travelling to Madrid for the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day festival.

The Telegraph reports that an estimated 2 million passengers would have been affected and that the second day of planned strikes was due to fall during one of the busiest days of the summer holiday season.

Unions representing the baggage handlers said an agreement had been reached with their employer to reinstate the dismissed workers.
