Staff member dismissed after financial irregularities at Cork Credit Union

This is the county’s second credit union scandal in less than two weeks.

A STAFF MEMBER at a Cork Credit Union has been dismissed after financial irregularities were uncovered.

An internal investigation at Gurranabraher Credit Union led to a complaint to the gardaí and the matter being referred to the Central Bank.

It’s understood that gardaí in Cork are investigating a potential €200,000 theft.

In a statement to TheJournal.ie, the Central Bank said it is responsible for the regulation of credit unions registered under the Credit Union Act, 1997 (as amended).

The Central Bank is engaged with this credit union on certain issues and will continue to engage.

This is the county’s second credit union scandal in less than two weeks. Last week Synergy credit union in Fermoy reported suspected fraud of over €400,000.

Both Credit Unions said they will continue to operate as normal despite the investigations.
