The Skelligs take centre stage in the trailer for the latest Star Wars film

At this rate, Skellig Michael should probably get its name somewhere on the billing.

LAST MAY, IRELAND once again welcomed the cast and crew of Star Wars, as filming for The Last Jedi took place in Donegal, Kerry and West Cork.

Last night, the hotly anticipated official trailer finally arrived for the eighth edition of the mega franchise, and those locations have come to life.

Watch out though, the director Rian Johnson has warned to avoid the trailer if you want to come into The Last Jedi “clean” and without spoilers:

The trailer picks up where The Force Awakens finished – with Rey and Luke Skywalker still on an island.

And lovely new shots of Skellig Michael feature throughout

The trailer has dropped with the usual hype – meaning millions have already seen these wonderful shots

Some think its prominence in The Last Jedi is going to make the Wild Atlantic Way even more popular with Star Wars fans than it already is

Always a nice boost seeing it pop up in some of the biggest movie events of the decade

For locals, it’s really surreal

Last year, LucasFilm even published an ad thanking the people of West Cork for having them.

It spoke in glowing terms about the setting they were leaving behind:

We have been captivated by the landscape of the Wild Atlantic Way, it has provided a spectacular backdrop for our story.
The tireless commitment of our Irish crew, the enthusiasm and support of all the people in West Cork have made our Irish adventure one we will always treasure.

At this rate, Skellig Michael should probably get its name somewhere on the billing when it’s finally released on December 15.
