Flooding in Dundonald, Belfast yesterday Alamy

Storm Bert cleanup begins, but Status Orange and Yellow wind warnings still active in West

Met Éireann has said, even where no warnings are in place, it’s going to be a windy day.

LAST UPDATE | 9 hrs ago

FRESH WEATHER WARNINGS have been issued by Met Éireann as Storm Bert rages on.

Status Orange wind warnings are in place for Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. They’ll remain in place from 8am today until 2am on Monday.

Meanwhile, Status Yellow wind warnings will be in place until 7pm this evening in Clare, Kerry and Galway.

Donegal will have a Status Yellow wind warning over it until 8am on Monday.

Met Éireann has said, even where no warnings are in place, it’s going to be a windy day.

The ESB is still restoring power to homes affected by Storm Bert. Of the 60,000 premises impacted as of yesterday, just a few thousand remain without power.

The worst impacted areas include Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Cavan, Monaghan, Kerry and Cork.

ESB Networks said: “With a Yellow level wind warning still in place for Western and Northwestern counties, our crews remain on alert and will continue to respond to further faults as they occur.”

The latest updates, including estimated restoration times, are available on PowerCheck.ie

The ESB also stressed the dangers posed by fallen live wires and is advising the public to stay away from fallen cables and to report such cases immediately to 1800 372 999.

Cleanup operations are resuming this morning after the weekend’s severe flooding. The areas worst affected were Killybegs, Co Donegal and Listowel, Co Kerry.

There are some disruptions to public transport today, particularly in the North West. To keep up to date, follow @IrishRail on X.

A number of roads are closed and people should check with their relevant local authority for the latest updates.

In Castlebar, Co Mayo, roads at Windy Gap, Straide, Keelogues and Ballinvilla have all reopened as conditions have improved.

In Cork, the Council has closed Fermoy Bridge due to rising river levels. They’ve deemed it unsafe for drivers and pedestrians.

Government response

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Fine Gael’s Peter Burke, said that his department would be seeking government approval to reopen the Emergency Humanitarian Flooding Scheme as a matter of urgency.

The scheme has previously been opened to provide support for businesses who had been unable to secure flood insurance and were impacted by flood water as a result of severe weather events.

Burke said that his department was leasing with the relevant other departments and authorities to ensure that it would be possible to activate the scheme if necessary.
