Staff to strike at Marks and Spencer tomorrow

Staff at Marks and Spencer have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING on getting a start on your Christmas shopping tomorrow,you may have to leave Marks and Spencer off your to-do list.

Staff at the company have voted by a margin of 94 per cent in favour of strike action.

That means from tomorrow 2,000 workers will stage the first of three planned days of strike. The two other days are Saturday the 12th and 20th of December.

The strike in the 17 stores is over the closure of the staff pension scheme in October.

Marks and Spencer also put forward proposals for a number of cost-cutting measures including;

  • A reduction in Sunday and public holiday pay
  • A reduction in managers
  • No Christmas bonus

Mandate Trade Union, which is representing the majority of the workers, says the actions of the company have left the workers without any choice but to take industrial action.

Gerry Light, Assistant General Secretary of Mandate said;

Our members do not want to be on strike in the run up to Christmas but unfortunately the behaviour of their employer has forced their hand.

Marks and Spencer says it has done all it can to stop the strike from going ahead.
