The supermoon is still over Ireland - here's how it looked last night

The moon will remain much brighter than normal this evening – cloud permitting.

THE SUPERMOON WILL remain over Ireland tonight – if you get a break in the clouds.

On Monday evening, the lunar orb was the closest it has been to Earth for 68 years – meaning it appeared unusually bright and large in the night sky.

This evening, the moon will remain much brighter than normal in any clear sky, according to Astronomy Ireland. The organisation has calculated that the moon will be 1.7% farther away tonight than on Tuesday night.

A free telescope watch will be organised by Astronomy Ireland near Dublin, to catch the supermoon – and planet Mars. Details can be found here.

A ‘supermoon’ happens because the moon does not orbit around the Earth in a perfect circle.

Instead, its elliptical orbit means that the moon’s distance from Earth can vary by up to 14%. The point at which the moon is closest to earth is called the ‘perigee’.
