A SURFER WAS winched to safety by helicopter last night from the base of the Cliffs of Moher after he was washed ashore.

His companion raised the alarm just before 8pm yesterday evening.

Coast guard rescue teams, a lifeboat, and the Rescue 118 helicopter were all involved in the rescue.

In a post on Facebook, Doolin Coast Guard said that along with others from Kilkee, they deployed flares from the top of the cliffs to keep the surfer visible, and prepared climbing equipment in case a rescue by boat or helicopter wasn’t possible.

However, under direction from the coast guard teams, the helicopter was able to successfully winch the man on board.

He was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment.
