Army removes World War Two-era artillery shell found in north Dublin city centre

Nottingham Street was sealed off earlier while the shell was removed.

LAST UPDATE | 15 Jun 2021

AN ARMY BOMB disposal team has removed a World War Two-era artillery shell from a street on the northside of Dublin city centre.

An Garda Síochána requested that the army team investigate a suspicious item found on Nottingham Street, Ballybough, Dublin 3.

The team arrived at the scene around 5pm and left two hours later.

“On arrival a cordon was established and maintained for the duration of the operation,” a spokesperson for the Defence Forces said.

“A historical World War 2 era artillery shell was identified, made safe and removed for disposal elsewhere,” they said.

“Should members of the public encounter suspicious items, or hazardous substances, they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána.”

Nottingham Street, which is near the North Strand Road, was sealed off while gardaí and the bomb disposal team were at the scene.

Earlier this evening, gardaí said in a statement that members were “at a house following reports of the discovery of a suspicious device this afternoon in the Nottingham Street area of Dublin 3″.
