Free your home from unsightly cables: How to tackle messy cords around the house

Tackle those pesky wires for good.

WE’RE GOING FULL aesthetic for this week’s taskmaster and taking on the unsightly cables that gather (seemingly out of nowhere) around our homes. Whatever your style may be, it’s a pretty universal task to try and conceal messy wires to achieve a seamless look. With a little bit of creativity and a splash of DIY, whether it’s TV wires or charging cables, you can be wire-free and adorn your home with the pieces that bring you joy.

Decorative baskets are your best friend

Oh, a decorative basket… how we love you so. This is a particularly good answer to a messy cable problem if you have space beneath your TV console or if your cables tend to gather on a kitchen countertop. Chuck them in a decorative woven basket and instantly it’s a purposeful solution to an unsightly problem. It keeps them hidden away, and organises them, the pinnacle of out of sight, out of mind.

Clip, clip, clip everything in sight

Using clear, plastic clips is a great way to tackle those pesky unorganised cables, particularly TV cables. They’re readily available, we recommend these Command strip clips, and attach to virtually any surface from painted walls or tiled surfaces to console tables, laminate or glass. It’s an affordable way to keep your cables out of sight by strategically hiding them behind a piece of furniture, such as a console table, hiding cords on walls, they can even be used on slim surfaces such as TV console tables and on kitchen islands if you have a particularly messy charging stations you may want to hide.

Hide TV wires in plain sight

Sometimes things aren’t as complicated as they seem and as opposed to trying to find some furniture to hide TV wires behind or bulking up your units with additional boxes, hide them all in one place right before your eyes with a simple cable management system. This PVC white mini trunking system is a stylish way to incorporate cables into any decor, available from Screwfix, it’s quick and easy to install and works for satellite, broadband and cable TV wires. These cable management kits are also in abundance on Amazon - so do your research to see which one suits your space best.

Get the professionals in

We’re ending with this one because although we believe that we could tackle this task ourselves, sometimes life gets in the way and we’re just too busy! We’re firm believers that there’s nothing wrong with calling in the professionals to sort things out. The Hangman team have over fifteen years experience in mounting TVs and you can see from their website, there’s not a cable to be seen! Of course, this solution is more geared towards the task of actually mounting your TV in the first place. For general organisation and ways to declutter (big or small) we’ve talked about them before in the Home Mag and we’ll continue to talk about them – professional organisers like The Home Reset and Neatly.ie are always there to help you tackle mess around your home.
