The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock.

Every afternoon, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know by 5 o’clock.

1. # MURPHY REPORT: A chapter of the Murphy Report that had previously been withheld was published today, following the sentencing of former priest Tony Walsh on 17 counts of sexual abuse against children.

Speaking on RTE Radio1′s News at One today, shortly after the chapter was published, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said that he sleeps better knowing that the serial child sex abuser Tony Walsh is in prison “and not walking the streets of Dublin”.

The chapter, available here, gives details of a catalogue of complaints made against Walsh throughout his time as a priest – and the failure of the church authorities to properly investigate accusations of sexual abuse.

2. # WIKILEAKS: The Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern suspected that Shannon airport was being used by the US military to transport prisoners of war, according to a diplomatic cable released by Wikileaks.

The cable, which was written by the US ambassador to Ireland at the time Thomas C Foley, outlines how Ahern had been “quite convinced” that the United States had operated “at least three flights involving [prisoner] renditions” through the airport.

3. # BOND MARKETS: The ratings agency Moody’s has slashed its rating of Irish government debt by five notches - from Aa2 to Baa1.

Ireland’s government bonds are now just three notches above ‘official’ junk ratings.

4. # GENERAL ELECTION: Fianna Fáil minister Noel Dempsey has announced that he will not be seeking re-election as a deputy in the general election next year.

His announcement comes hot on the heels of TD Beverley Flynn’s announcement that she would also be stepping down at the next election. And, less than a month ago, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern also announced he would also be stepping down from politics.

5. # GRIM SLEEPER: Police in Los Angeles have released pictures of 160 women they fear may have been victims of a serial killer – who has nicknamed the Grim Sleeper.

The photos were found in the home of Lonnie Franklin Jr, who is already standing accused of murdering 10 women between 1985 and 2007. Police found about 1,000 explicit photographs of women at Franklin’s home. Many of the subjects are smiling but some appear to be heavily drugged or dead.
