The 5 at 5 Five things you need to know by 5 o’clock.

EVERY AFTERNOON, TheJournal.ie brings you the five things you really need to know at 5 o’clock.

1. #LAND PRICES: Agricultural land prices have fallen by 50 per cent over the past four years, according to a new study released in the Irish Farmer’s Journal today.

2. #MUSICAL CHAIRS: As the Seanad nominations begin to roll in, Taoiseach Brian Cowen has announced he is appointing Darragh O’Brien to fill the seat left vacant by Ciaran Cannon’s election to the Dáil in Galway East. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin has announced Gerry Adams will take over as his party’s leader in the Dáil.

3. #ARCHIVES: Attention amateur history sleuths: Ireland’s archive collections have been given a new central home online. The archives include records from current and defunct government, local agencies and estates, as well as personal contributions.

4 #CRICKET: Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom spoke to TheScore.ie earlier today about the “terrific occasion” of Ireland’s win over England yesterday at the Cricket World Cup in Bangalore. Deutrom commended the magnanimity of the English team after their defeat and said Ireland needed more games if the team is to develop further.

5. #AFGHANISTAN: The dog which held the record for finding the most home-made bombs and weapons in Afghanistan died shortly after his handler, Liam Tasker, was killed in action in the Helmand Province on Tuesday. Springer spaniel, Theo, died from a seizure just hours after Tasker’s death.
