The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock.

Every afternoon, TheJournal.ie brings you 5 things you really need to know by 5pm.

1. #DERRY BOMB: The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for last night’s late-night car bombing in Derry city. The republican paramilitary group claimed responsibility by calling the Derry Journal and using a known codeword.

A one-hour warning had been given for the bombing to the PSNI, and nobody was injured.

2. #HUNGARY: The government has declared a state of emergency after a reservoir of toxic sludge burst and flooded a number of small villages, killing four people. The reddish goo is highly toxic to the skin, poisonous if consumed, and can cause severe burns and tissue damage.

3. #KERVIEL: The trader who concealed €4.9bn of losses in Societe Generale has been sentenced to three years in jail with a further two suspended. Jerome Kerviel was also ordered to repay the €4.9bn his reckless trading lost for the bank – the equivalent of 553,047,404 years of minimum-wage work in France.

4. #MOSS KEANE: Tributes have been paid to the former Munster and Ireland rugby player Moss Keane, who has lost his long battle with cancer at the age of 62. Keane earned 51 caps for his country, and was a member of the Munster side that beat the All Blacks in 1978. He was also a noted gaelic footballer.

5. #TWITTER: The microblogging platform has a new CEO. Evan Williams, the company’s co-founder, has decided to step down to focus on product strategy. His successor is Dick Costolo, the company’s current COO, who was in charge of FeedBurner when it was sold to Google.

Speaking of fives, by the way, did you know that this month has five Fridays, five Saturdays and five Sundays – a statistical occurrence that happens just once every 823 years? Well, you’re wrong. That’s totally wrong – it happened in 2004. In fact, the 2010 calendar is identical to the 1999 one. (Well done to Jim Daly for spotting that one.)
