Facebook threat to assassinate the Taoiseach investigated

The threat appeared on a page campaigning for the saving of a hospital in Castlebar last Wednesday, gardaí have confirmed.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO a threat to assassinate Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been undertaken by gardaí who are now preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The threat occurred on a Facebook page ‘Save the Sacred Heart Hospital Castlebar’ last week.

A user posted a threat that if the hospital was closed he would shoot the Taoiseach “JFK assassination style”, according to a report in the Irish Sun this morning.

A garda spokesperson has confirmed to TheJournal.ie that the matter is being investigated by gardaí in Mayo following a report of a threat to them last Wednesday.

“A file is now being prepared for the DPP,” the spokesperson said.

Last week, funding of €11 million was approved by the Health Service Executive (HSE) for the hospital to bring it up to standards laid down by the health watchdog, HIQA.

A government spokesperson had no comment to make when contacted this morning.
