Taoiseach to discuss 'rebuilding' Europe at Davos

Enda Kenny’s first World Economic Forum session is to focus on rethinking the roles of the European Commission and Council.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY is to join world leaders gathering at Davos in Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.

The main theme of this year’s event, which opens today and closes on Sunday, is “The Great Transformation Shaping New Models”.

Kenny is expected to take part in a series of discussions on political and economic issues and he will participate in an interactive plenary session tomorrow on ‘Rebuilding Europe’.

According to the Davos programme, the session will focus on rethinking the roles of the European Commission and Council while considering how Europe will be shaped in the future by its structural and political challenges.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will also be on the panel for the session, as will Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Tapani Katainen, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

Enda Kenny will also participate in ‘an information gathering of world leaders’ session at Davos on Friday which will look at issues ranging from job creation and social stability to inclusive governance in the digital age.

Other sessions at Davos will focus on global energy issues, neuroscience, the implications of global population growth, the importance of satellites, and how to rebuild post-earthquake Haiti. A debate on the future of capitalism is also planned.

Events at the World Economic Forum can be watched online via a stream on the official site.
