'You'd be amazed by the materials you can reuse': Dublin hygge-hunter Tara shares her cosy reading nook

Mum-of-three Tara Kennedy chats us through her favourite spot.

EACH WEEK AS part of our new Home Magazine, we will be asking Irish people with a passion for interiors about their favourite spot in their home.

Tara Kennedy lives with her family in her husband’s childhood home, a three-bed semi-detached in Dublin.

This week, stay-at-home mum-of-three Tara (@mollyk.77) chatted us through the space in her house that she loves the most: her reading nook.

What do you love about this space?

I love hygge (the Danish word for a quality of cosiness) so this is a bright, comfortable, cosy and calm space which contains some of my favourite elements; raw wood, plants, crystals, books, candles, cushions, sheepskin and my upcycled chair I saved from the skip.

I covered my salvaged chair with a nice warm sheepskin throw and my new cacti cushion as I love cacti plants.

What was your inspiration when you were putting the space together?

Instagram is a great tool and there’s a great community of people sharing ideas and inspiration. Pinterest is also another great app to peruse.

I’m inspired by Scandinavian and boho styles and industrial interiors – a very eclectic mix – so I tried to take different elements for my room and create a calm, clean and curated space.

How well does this photo reflect the rest of your home?

I’ve used similar materials throughout the house, but painted the walls different colours. It all depends on how a room feels to me. We like to repurpose materials so we use pallets, planks and scaffold boards for consoles, shelving and mantels.

It’s amazing the materials people discard that can be reused. I like the fact that we can make what we like for practically nothing and have a unique bespoke piece that fits our little house perfectly. I’m lucky my husband is so handy and patient!

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

This room is always tidy as I like it to be an uncluttered space. The other rooms in the house, however, not so much. With two teenagers and a nine-year-old tornado, a tidy, uncluttered house isn’t going to happen.

Do you have a spot in your home that you’re particularly proud of? Do you enjoy styling the different rooms in your house? Are you always adding and changing little things to make your space stand out? If so, we want to hear from you! Email amy@thejournal.ie with a few lines about yourself and your home for a chance to feature in My Home in One Photo.
