Poll: Were your parents the biggest influence on your career choice?

Parents may not be fully aware of the vast range of science and technology careers available, Dr Des Fitzgerald said.

A UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT has said that too often, parents are influencing their children’s career choices based on outdated information.

University of Limerick President Dr Des Fitzgerald told The Irish Times that “parents may not be aware” of the wide-range of Stem subjects available to their children (‘Stem’ stands for science, technology, engineering and maths).

There’s a shortage of students applying for college courses in those subjects, while an increased demand for graduates with those skills.

With the Leaving Cert about to get underway, we’re asking: Did your parents have the biggest influence on your career choice?

Poll Results:

No (7375)
Yes (2764)
I'm not sure (714)
No, my teachers did (436)
No, my friends did (302)
