Teenager's body taken from sea after car crash

Two other teens managed to swim to safety after their car went into the water in Wexford.

Updated, 10.39am

THE BODY OF a teenager has been pulled from the water off the Wexford coast, after a car crash that sent the vehicle into the sea.

Two other teens managed to swim to safety after the accident at Courtown Harbour.

The car in which the three young men were travelling hit a wall at the harbour at around 10.30 last night, then went into the water.

The Coast Guard and the Courtown RNLI crew launched a search for the 19-year-old victim. A short time later his body was recovered from inside the submerged car, and taken from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where a post mortem is due to be carried out.

The RNLI said they also carried out a thorough search of the harbour, but it was hampered by a large amount of debris in the water after two days of heavy rain washing into local rivers.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for any witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information should contact Gorey garda station on 053 943 0690.
