TWO TEENAGERS WHO died in a collision involving a bus and an e-scooter in Waterford City have been named locally.

The collision happened shortly before 2.10am on the R680 Cork Road in Waterford city on Thursday morning.

The deceased have been named locally as 15-year-old Gilbert Collins and 17-year-old Abuzwa Idris.

Gilbert was pronounced dead at the scene, while Abuzwa died later in Waterford University Hospital.

The driver of the bus was uninjured and there were no passengers on the bus at the time.

In a statement, JJ Kavanagh & Sons sent its “deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased, who lost their lives so tragically”.

“We are working closely with An Garda Síochána and other Emergency Services to do everything possible at this very difficult time,” added the statement.

A Garda Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to provide support to the families at this time, and gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the Cork Road in Waterford city between 1:45am and 2:15am on Thursday are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Mayor of Waterford Metropolitan Area and Independent councillor Joe Kelly said that people who knew the teenagers described them as outgoing, friendly, and very popular among their peer group.

“Everybody only has good things and nice things to say about these young men who tragically lost their lives,” said Kelly.
