Ten dead after German train crash

Ten people have died and 40 have been injured in a train crash in Germany, which occurred when a regional passenger train collided with a goods train on Saturday evening.

TEN PEOPLE HAVE have died in a train crash in Germany following a regional passenger train colliding with a goods train late Saturday in eastern Germany.

A total of 40 people were injured – half of whom seriously, reports AFP. The regional train was the HarzElbeExpress (HEX) travelling between Magdeburg and Halberstadt; the goods train belonged to a private company.

The passenger train derailed but did not catch fire, contrary to earlier reports, fire officials said. More than 150 firemen, police and rescue workers arrived at the scene after the incident.

The causes of the accident are not yet known.
