Tesco announces 200 new jobs across Ireland

Seven new stores and six mobile phone shops will be opened with some 80 jobs to be created before Christmas.

TESCO HAS ANNOUNCED that it will be creating 200 jobs in Ireland in the next year.

The announcement was made today and involves the opening of seven new stores and six mobile phone shops across the country.

Some 80 new jobs will be created before Christmas as part of the company’s €70 million capital investment progarmme for 2013. This includes 48 jobs with the opening of five new Express stores in Douglas Road in Cork and College Green, Dorset Street, Leonards Corner and Glasnevin Avenue in Dublin.

The company is also recruiting 18 third-level graduates based in stores around the country and at its head office in Dun Laoghaire.

A further 120 new jobs will come with the opening of new stores in Dundalk and Honeypark (Dun Laoghaire) next year. Construction work on these stores is now well underway.

Minister Simon Coveney welcomed the announcement today saying that the food sector “is showing resilience and dynamism”.

Tesco Ireland’s CEO Philip J Clarke said that these permanent new jobs “will help boost local economic activity at a difficult time for the Irish economy”.

The stores at Finglas and Douglas are due to open this week.

A lot of the jobs in Tesco’s are only 20 hours a week. They say that they have created 200 jobs but in fact they are employing people on half the hours of a full time employee to make figure look good. Split twenty hours over 5-6 days and for some people working in the shops they spend more time getting to and from work than they spend in work.

Correct Margaret. In the branch where my mother works they make announcements about these jobs but don’t tell the full picture. 13 week contract and when all the politicians pats on the back are finished they then let them go. No fanfare about this though.

You don’t need links. Just drive into a small town in rural area and see how much they charge you for parking, and how long you can stay in that parking slot before being asked to move on. You also might want to search for an article on here last week on how much the parking industry is worth to the country. I rest my case

Yup. And people on here bating about don’t shop at tescos boycott them. When it should be local government and councils that should be encouraging local businesses to thrive. They know that small business can solve the unemployment problem in this country, yet still try to squeeze as much out of them and don’t care about the repercussions.

No Problem, I lived in Notting Hill for 10 years and Kensington for 6. I walked through Holland Park every day. The following Tesco’s spring to mind. Portobello Road Metro, Notting Hill Gate, Holland Park, Bayswater, North Kensington, Warwick Road Superstore, Kensington Old Brompton express,South Kensington Express, Fulham Road Express, Chelsea Express, Kensington High Street Metro.
If you know London so well then you will know how close together these are. Hope that clarifies things for you.

Everyone of these tesco express shops is closing down the local family owned shop next to it and other shops in the area, soon the only place to shop will be tesco, they do create jobs but more people lose their jobs in the area the shops opened, lets start a campaign , nobody shop in tesco express! Support your local shop and stop putting money in this company because all their profits leave this country , tesco out !

Just to point out though, that tesco (and is has been proven ) buy more irish grown products than other shops like Dunnes and supervalu. Tesco’s are a convenience shop, and as i have pointed out in a post above, the local councils do not help with parking fee’s. I got caught not so long ago with going to the dentist. I could only pay for a 1 hour slot and was required to move on after that one hour. Unfortunately for me my dentist appointment took 1 hour 15 mins. As I was returning to the car the the parking man was in the process of writing out my ticket. What was i supposed to do?

Tesco Express opened in the town my family live in in England. Co Op and Lidl have survived one local butcher, one green grocer, one bakers all closed down. That’s been in the last year. A pub which had an off licence attached has closed down the off licence.
Tesco express opened just over 18 months, coincidence.
The Tesco Express shops are plain greed.
The proposed Dorset St shop I can see from my door, there are 2 other Tescos within 5 mins walk onr in Phibsboro and one on Upper Drumcodra Road plus large one in Fingla 5 minute drive.
Too many in such a confined space. Centra and Spar may last but the Greengrocers, Bakers and Butchers are in for a hard time. 2 off licences have already closed how long will the last one survive against Tesco

Always looks good to have more jobs in the country, however with Tesco there’s always a catch. I’m very sceptical of them due to their backing of jobsbridge and the system in the UK. (which is basically slavery) I’d prefer more details on who’s losing hours and the wages the new staff would be on before I’d consider it good news.

While I’m all for supporting local, I can’t see why people would give out about Tesco creating jobs when there are thousands of people in Ireland struggling right now. Surely 200 people being able to put food in their children’s bellies, keep a roof over their heads is more important? Not to mention the fact that work give people a sense of purpose, of pride. Of being useful, providing. With the amount of young men taking their own lives of late, shouldn’t we be grateful for the chance of some to get away from the brink?

Whether there’s a Tesco on the door step, or one 10km down the road, it has come to the point where people will shop where they can afford. The luxury of being able to shop in independent stores, with higher prices, is gone. And most independent stores DO have higher prices, as their rates are high, over heads are high etc. Most people just don’t have the money, and would rather travel a bit for a better deal.

You are dead right. I posted earlier about shops which had closed down in the UK after Tesco Express opened.
I firmly believe that Tesco opening shops in such close proximity is greed and will cause some of the small local shops to close.
At the same time though I know that I will use the Tesco Express due to it having lower prices.
Some might call me a hypocrite and maybe I am but that’s the way of the world and I’m pretty sure that all those others slagging Tesco down will do the same.
