Tesco launches used website to sell used cars

The retail giant has added another string to its bow after launching a website to sell used cars in the UK.

TESCO HAS LAUNCHED a new online service dedicated to selling used cars without “unnecessary stocking costs, expensive showrooms or pushy sales people”, according to a statement on the company’s website.
Tescocars.com is a joint venture between the retailer and Sir Trevor Chinn - a leading figure in the industry who has a large stake in another internet auto sales company, Carsite, the Financial Times reports. Tesco has a minority stake in Carsite.

As consumers have traditionally been wary of purchasing cars online, watching how people will reacted to a “a trusted brand such as Tesco” would be interesting, deputy editor of Fleet News Simon Harris told the newspaper.

As an added sweetener, the retailer will also offer 2,000 Clubcard points to anyone buying car through the website, the Guardian reports.

The move comes shortly after Tesco announced plans to cut its the carbon emissions in its supply chain by 30 per cent over the next decade.

A spokesperson for Tesco told TheJournal.ie that the cars are stored in an outlet in Longbridge, Birmingham, and that while customers from overseas could collect cars from that location, the company had no plans “as yet” to open an outlet in Ireland.
