Motor Envy: The Tesla Model S is a supercar for the whole family

Supercar power, super green credentials.

What’s this then?

This is of the most talked about cars of the last decade, and one that lives up to the hype. This is, of course, a Tesla Model S and this particular S 75D model can be yours for €77,900.

What’s so special about it?

The Tesla Model S is a sleek and sexy sportback with some serious green credentials. It is an electric car and supercar all rolled into one highly desirable package. According to Tesla’s NEDC test, the electric range for the Model S 75D is up to 480km – making it the longest range of any mainstream electric car on the market, apart from other higher-powered Tesla models.

Any standout design features?

The Tesla Model S is sleek and streamlined and its smooth shape concentrates on aerodynamic efficiency, but on the inside it is spacious and functional. The liftback-style boot is very practical and, because there is no combustion engine, there is also a frunk (a front trunk) meaning the Model S has 894 litres of storage. Plenty of room to carry all your gear.

You can fit three child seats across the back too and legroom and headroom is ample for all passengers. It really is a great family car.

And what powers this Tesla Model S?

This particular Tesla Model S is powered by the 75kWh battery and it has a dual motor and all-wheel drive.

Thanks to the all-electric powertrain and dual motors – one for the front and the other for the rear axle – torque delivery is instant and you really do feel the Gs as you get that boost in acceleration and do the 0-100km/h dash in just 4.4 seconds.

Does the Tesla Model S have any luxurious touches?

The cabin has a premium, executive feel and is very refined and calm thanks to some lovely soft touch materials and plenty of light. The main feature of the cabin is a huge 17-inch vertical touchscreen from where you can control almost all functions of the car.

It is an elegant system with tonnes of features and some cool hidden Easter eggs too. It also has a HEPA air filter system, sat nav, a reversing camera, and ambient interior lighting as well as heated seats.

But who would drive this car?

Someone who has always wanted to own a supercar but is also environmentally conscious of tailpipe emissions. Someone looking for a spacious family car with an electric powertrain and cutting-edge technology that stands out from the crowd.

With parts costing thousands and most things failing on it, door handles, motors, you would be lucky to get to five years without a motor change, drive shafts because of the high torque motor, the screen failing completely to no response on certain parts of it, when its in the guarantee it takes awhile to sort stuff because they don’t allow anyone to work on it other than themselves. Stay clear.
