Bus carrying 12 prisoners falls from Texas overpass onto train tracks

The Department of Public Safety could not give details on the number of deaths but said it was a fatal incident.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS say a bus carrying 12 prisoners and three corrections officers fell from an overpass in West Texas and crashed onto train tracks below, killing an unspecified number of people.

Department of Public Safety trooper Shawn Baxter, who is en route to the scene west of Odessa near Penwell, could not confirm details yet but said it was a fatal accident.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says the DPS reported that a train may have collided with the bus or been struck by it after the bus fell from the overpass.

A spokeswoman says Medical Centre Hospital in Odessa is treating five patients had no more information.

Clark says the bus was travelling from Abilene to El Paso with 12 prisoners and three officers.
