Tomb Raider, Rain Man and more: Rate these must-see movies coming soon to TG4

IF YOU’RE A film buff who loves watching movies both old and new, you’ll want to try TG4′s new rating tool, Prátaí Lofa. Meaning Rotten Spuds, Prátaí Lofa is TG4′s all-Irish tribute to the classic film rating site, Rotten Tomatoes.

Here’s how it works: we give our rating for the programme or movie, you share your rating, and we compare both to the Rotten Tomatoes score.

We’ve already shared our ratings for the best dramas coming to TG4 this season, and this week we’re looking at some of the network premieres which will be airing between now and Christmas. 

From a classic horror to a blockbuster rom-com, we’ve picked five unmissable premieres coming to TG4 and shared our rating out of ten for each. See how your rating compares to ours and everybody else’s below…

1. Halloween (2018)

A creepy classic, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode for the last installment of the Halloween franchise. The film sees her come to her final confrontation with masked figure Michael Myers who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree forty years ago. Catch it on TG4 on November 1. 

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 7.9/10, we give it 8. Let us know your rating below.

2. Rain Man (1988)

Starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, Academy Award-winning Rain Man tells the story of Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) who learns that his estranged father has died and left most of his fortune to his other son Raymond (Hoffman). Not knowing about each other’s existence until then, the unlikely pair travel cross-country as Charlie tries to get control of the money. Watch it on TG4 on November 6.

Rotten Tomatoes gives Rain Man an impressive 8.9/10, but we go all the way and give it 9/10. Tell us what you think below.

3. Tomb Raider (2018)

The most recent installment in the Tomb Raider movie series, Alicia Vikander steps into the shoes of Lara Croft for this 2018 film. After losing her father as a teen, Lara decides to solve the puzzle of his mysterious death, taking her from the streets of London to a mythical island off the coast of Japan. Tomb Raider will be on TG4 on November 15. 

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 5.2/10, but we give the action-packed film 7/10. Share your rating below.

4. The American President (1995)

Academy Award winner Michael Douglas portrays widowed US president Andrew Shepherd in this romantic comedy-drama. The film follows him as he pursues a relationship with environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), putting both their careers into jeopardy. Martin Sheen, Michael J Fox and Richard Dreyfuss also star in this blockbuster, which airs on TG4 on December 4.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it an impressive 9.1/10, and we have to agree. Tell us your rating below.

5. Scent of a Woman (1992)

A critically acclaimed film, Scent of a Woman tells the story of college student Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell), who takes a job as an assistant to blind, retired army officer Lt Col Frank Slade (Al Pacino). Pacino won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the irritable and difficult Slade, while the film received three further Oscar nominations. Watch it on TG4 on December 18.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 8.9/10, and we can’t help but go a step further and give it full marks, 10/10. Let us know your rating below.

    @Pat O’Dwyer: Can I just add, that anyone who expects their e-mails to be private is like a naked woman in a ground floor room along a busy street who is surprised when the passes by look in. Would you e-mail you bank account log in codes to a friend? Would you?

    @Val Martin: No you don’t Val. Plagiarising involves passing off someone else’s work as your own. It’s simply avoided by acknowledging the source. In the case of very well known sources; it’s taken as read that everyone can reasonably be expected to know the source (eg French) even if you don’t explicitly say so on every occasion.

    @Terry McClatchey: Surely you don’t expect a politician to refrain form using someone else’s ideas as their own?. Why do you think all modern political parties have the same policies? They plagarise then from each other.

    If there was no plagiarism, then there would be few song writers, few after dinner speeches, I don’t know if the instant case involves coincidence or plagarism, but if it does, so what? Trump will be President , he will appoint has staff, I wish I was one of them
