That's a wrap on Maths Week - here's your answer to the Sunday puzzle

Maths Week is over, so let’s see how you did.

MATHS WEEK MAY be over, but for those 500,000 who took part, we won’t leave you hanging.

Our final puzzle yesterday was another doozy. If you haven’t yet attempted any of last week’s challenges, they can all be found here.

Maths Week aims to promote a positive attitude toward the sometimes dreaded subject.

The puzzles were expertly compiled for The Journal readers by Eoin Gill and Prof Colm Mulcahy of Maths Week Ireland and South-East Technological University (SETU).

Let us know in the comments how you did.

Sunday puzzle: The answer

1) 11 seconds. It strikes the first chime at time 0, and then the second chime after 1
second.

2) They align 10 times

3) 1 hour 15 minutes

4) 1.10, 2.20, 3.30, 4.40, 5.50, 10.01, 11.11, 12.21, 13.31, 14.41, 15.51, 20.02, 21.12, 22.22, 23.32

5) 4 minutes

6) The cold tap will fill 1/6 of the bath in 1 minute

The hot tap will fill 1/12 of the bath in 1 minute

Together they will fill 1/6 + 1/12 = 3/12 of the bath in 1 minute. That is ¼ of the bath in 1 minute, therefore 4 minutes to fill the bath.

Maths Week is sponsored by the Science Foundation Ireland Discover programme and the Department of Education, and is organised by Calmast at SETU.
