The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING,TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door…

1. #CATHOLIC CHURCH Cardinal Seán Brady has criticised the makers of last night’s BBC This World for “seriously misrepresenting” his role in the inquiry into allegations of child abuse against Brendan Smyth. There have been calls for Brady’s resignation in the wake of the programme, which alleges that he failed to protect children from abuse.

2. #FISCAL COMPACT The Finance Minister Michael Noonan says he’s standing over comments he made yesterday about a No vote in the forthcoming Fiscal Compact referendum resulting in a “dramatically more difficult” December budget. Noonan maintains that a No vote will “create uncertainty and a lack of confidence” which will require him to lower expectations for economic growth.

3. #BANKERS It’s emerged today that hundreds of the country’s top level bankers earn salaries in excess of €100,000. Information released in course of questions in the Dáil confirmed that 1,065 bankers at AIB, Permanent TSB and IBRC are earning basic take home salaries of more than €100,000.

4. #REPUTATION Google has been named as the company in Ireland with the best reputation, according to a new study. Kerry Group take the number two spot, followed by Apple. Bringing up the rear of the table of 101 companies are AIB, Quinn and John Player and Sons, at numbers 99, 100 and 101 respectively.

5.  #ISLAND GETAWAY If you’ve ever fancied owning your very own private island, you could be in luck… although maybe it won’t be the sun getaway of your dreams. Inisliroo Island off the shore of Upper Lough Erne in Co. Fermanagh is up for grabs, for a cool three-quarters of a million euro.

Funny how austerity does not affect bankers or politicians.

The austerity strategy serves to block the progression of the people. Too much progression threatens the hoarding potential of the richest 2 or 3%.
