The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you should know before you head out the door.

1. #JOBS: It hasn’t been a good day on the jobs front with Pfizer confirming that 177 jobs are to be cut at two of its pharmaceutical plants in Cork next year. The company said the job losses at Ringaskiddy and Little Island are a result of reduced volumes of medications manufactured at the sites.

And this afternoon, Atlantic Homecare has announced that it intends to close five of its 13 stores nationwide. SIPTU is to meet with an interim examiner to discuss the extent of possible job losses.

2. #TIGHT-LIPPED: Enda Kenny has refused to give details about a telephone conversation he had with Angela Merkel after the results of the referendum on the Fiscal Compact last week. The exchanges in the Dáil got quite heated today as Opposition TDs pushed the Taoiseach on what the German leader said about a bank debt deal for Ireland.

Meanwhile, the President of the ECB Mario Draghi said that the Yes result was not intended as a bargaining chip for securing such a deal on debt.

3. #HACKED OFF: LinkedIn has said it is investigating reports that 6.46 million of its users’ passwords have been stolen and posted online by a Russian hacker. Several users have confirmed that they found their real passwords on the internet forum where the hacker is also looking for help in removing the encryption.

4. #EARTHQUAKE: People in Mayo were given a fright this morning as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake created tremors on land and caused some light structural damage such as cracked chimneys.

5. #LIGHT RELIEF: A number of Ireland’s greatest sporting heroes were involved in a special leg of the Olympic Torch Relay event in Dublin this morning. Forty-one torchbearers, including Olympic medallists Wayne McCullough, Michael Carruth, Ronnie Delaney and Sonia O’Sullivan, carried the flame from Harbour Road in Howth to Government Buildings and St Stephen’s Green.
