Prickly President

1. Michael D Higgins has accused Israel of leaking a letter he wrote congratulating the President of Iran on his appointment. 

In July, President Higgins wrote to Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian to congratulate him on his appointment. The letter was not officially published by the President’s office but was circulated online and received some criticism, including from members of Fine Gael.

‘Safe for now’

2. A group of people seeking asylum in Ireland have been detailing their experiences since arriving in Dublin and explaining why they’ve decided to seek shelter inside a vacant house in the city.

The move, they believe, offers them the best prospect of safety following a spate of attacks on tented and other makeshift accommodation by anti-migrant groups.

The attacks – which have occurred at various locations around Dublin – have included beatings by armed groups wielding knives, iron bars and bricks.

IDF strikes

3. Dozens of Israeli air strikes have hit Lebanon’s south and east, official media and AFP correspondents said, as the Israeli military told people in Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah targets.

SUVs and pick-up trucks

4. The Department of Transport has said it won’t be taking action against imports of extra-large American SUVs and pickup trucks, as environmental campaigners raise fears that the new popularity of the vehicles in Europe poses a road safety risk.

Trump’s plans

5. Former US president Donald Trump has said he does not “think” he would run again for president in 2028 if he falls short in his bid to return to the White House in 2024

Hate Speech 

6. The Taoiseach has said he still wants to see hate speech laws updated, despite plans being scrapped from proposed legislation last week.

Air quality

7. Burning solid fuels in homes and road traffic continue to be the “main threats to good air quality”, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s annual air quality report.

Culture Night arrests

8. Three people have been arrested in the Temple Bar area on Friday night for public order offences, gardaí said, as clothing store Tola Vintage hosted its annual block party to celebrate Culture Night. 

Ukraine

9. A former member of the Irish Defence Forces has died in combat in Ukraine. The man, who was in his late 20s, died last week. The ex-Irish soldier was a member of the elite Army Ranger Wing when he served in the Defence Forces here.
