The 9 at 9 Nine things you really need to know by 9am: recessionomics, road rage and a giant fossilised penguin.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know with you morning coffee.

1. #BLACK THURSDAY: This morning’s papers offer wall-to-wall coverage of Black Thursday. And it’s no light reading. The tabloids, in particular, are pulling no punches. The Star splashes with a front page image of a tombstone and the words “30th of September 2010 Ireland RIP. Our future killed by wanker bankers and stupid politicians”. The headline in the Guardian, which reads Ireland: Busted, gives a flavour of what the rest of the world makes of yesterday’s announcements.

2. #POLL: But despite everything, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan is the popular choice to lead the country into the next election, according the latest IPSOS/MRBI poll, which found that 61 per cent of people want Taoiseach Brian Cowen to step down ahead of it.

3. #NAMAGEDDON: The leaders of the Opposition are demanding details of the government’s ‘four year plan’ to rescue the economy . Yet there’s a more conciliatory mood in the Seanad, where two FG politicians – Senators Paschal Donohoe and Paul Bradford – are calling for a “political truce”.

4. #RECESSIONOMICS: Best skip this item if you’re finding the news a bit depressing this morning. Medical card holders are to pay 50 per cent for every prescribed item on their pharmacy bills from today; electricity prices go up 5 per cent – also from today – thanks to the public service obligation levy designed to fund wind and peat-fuelled power; while the USI claims 100,000 graduates are out of work and the Independent warns us to expect four hairshirt budgets. And in the last piece of recessionomics news,  insolvencyjournal.ie says 1500 insolvencies are likely by the end of the year. You can come out from behind the sofa now.

5. #ROAD RAGE: The 49-year-old man who was attacked with a hurley during a road rage incident in Sandymount in Dublin on Sunday has died in hospital.

6. #ECUADOR Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa has been rescued from a hospital in the capital, Quito, where he had been trapped for several hours in an uprising by disaffected police.

7. #USA: A student outed as gay on the internet after a roommate posted a video of him having sex with another man has committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. His last words, posted on Facebook about 10 minutes before he died, were brief and to the point: “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.”

8. #LIARS: How to spot a serial liar – they’ll be the one with the really clean fingernails. Liars like to literally clean up after their deceit, a new study suggests. What’s more, if they type the fib in an email, they want hand sanitizer; if they speak the lie, they prefer mouthwash.

9. #SCIENCE: We couldn’t find a fluffy kitten story to cheer you up today, so how about a fossilised penguin instead? An ancient giant penguin that lived 36 million years ago has been discovered in Peru. Bet he survived a few recessions.
