The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are the nine things you need to know as you kick off your Friday.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you begin your day.

1. #AUSTRALIA: Adrian Bayley has pleaded guilty to the murder of Drogheda woman Jill Meagher in Melbourne last year. The 41-year-old revised his earlier ‘not guilty’ plea at a hearing this morning. He also pleaded guilty to a rape charge he had previously denied.

2. #NORTH KOREA: It’s reported this morning that North Korea has moved a second intermediate-range missile to its east coast – further heightening the prospect of an attack on Japan, South Korea or the US island of Guam. The US has said it is taking “all necessary precautions” to defend itself by sending missile defence systems to the island.

3. #ROADS: A 45-year-old woman has died after a traffic accident in Co Waterford last night. The woman’s car hit a van on the N25 between Waterford and Dungarvan. A man in his 40s has been arrested.

4. #TEACHERS: Around 42,000 existing teachers will have to undergo new Garda vetting – even though they have been vetted before – under arrangements announced by Alan Shatter. The justice minister says the introduction of a new vetting system will also mean many existing teachers – some of whom have been in the job for decades – will need to be reappraised for their suitability to work with children.

5. #HMV: HMV could be coming back to Ireland, under plans set to be confirmed this morning. It’s reported that restructuring firm Hilco – who have previously saved the A-Wear chain – are to buy HMV’s UK business, and hope to reopen at Henry Street in Dublin. There seems to be little prospect, however, of HMV looking to rent its former landmark premises on Grafton Street, which went up for rent this week.

6. #SYMPHYSIOTOMY: A petition with over 20,000 names calling for justice for symphysiotomy victims is to be handed into Leinster House today. The Survivors of Symphysiotomy group, which is behind the petition, wants the government to lift the statute of limitations so that survivors of the procedure – where the pelvis is sawn open on the pretence of facilitating childbirth – can seek justice in the courts.

7. #MIDDLE EAST: The United Nations has suspended food distribution to about 25,000 people in the Gaza Strip, after demonstrators stormed a depot to complain about cuts to aid. Dozens of people forced their way into a UN office demanding the return of a monthly cash allowance which was withdrawn last week as a result of funding cuts to the UN’s Relief and Works Agency programme.

8. #AER LINGUS: Aer Lingus has reported an increase in its number of passengers for March. 844,000 people flew with the airline, up by 4.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.

9. #HAPPILY MARRIED: If you’re looking for a hint about whether someone’s in a happy marriage, look to their waistline. New research has suggested that newlyweds who claim to be happy in their relationships are more likely to put on weight early into their marriage. By comparison, those who end up considering divorce are more likely to stay thin. The study is based on the weight-gain patterns of 169 newlywed couples, and theorises that people are less motivated to stay trim if they are no longer on the lookout for a partner.
