GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 It may be cold, but it’s also Friday. Here’s everything you need to know as you move into the weekend.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1.#SLAVERY: Two 67-year-olds have been released on bail after three women, including an Irish woman, were rescued from 30 years of slavery in a London house. The two are not British nationals, officials in England say.

2.#BAILOUT: The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has criticised the move to exit the bailout without access to a credit line. The council says that the decision of the Government to exit the bailout programme unaided will make it “more difficult” to access future support.

3.#RECOVERY: The Irish economy is showing “green shoots” of recovery, a new report says. The EY Economic Eye says that while the jobs market is recovering, the country’s GDP forecast has been revised downwards.

4.#SENTENCING: A 44-year-old former scout leader will be sentenced in Belfast today after being found guilty of 59 historic abuse charges. The man was found guilty of abusing four boys between 1982 and 1997. The judge has told the man he can “expect” jail time.

5.#DECISIONS: Tough decisions will be made in Ireland even after we exit the bailout. That is the opinion of Minister of State for EU Affairs Paschal Donohoe. Donohoe told TheJournal.ie that the gap between spending and taxation means that Ireland has tough calls to make in the future.

6.#JFK50: Today marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. A wreath will be placed by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore at the US Embassy in Dublin in honour of Kennedy.

7.#LATVIA: 25 people have died after a supermarket roof collapsed in the Latvian capital of Riga. Up to 35 people have been injured in the collapse and rescue teams are still working to free trapped shoppers.

8.#ESB: Unions representing staff at ESB will meet today to discuss what form industrial action will take. Employees have voted to take the action because of a massive hole in the company’s pension fund.

9.#CONSOLE WARS: Microsoft last night launched their new Xbox One console, kicking off a new generation of console wars. Microsoft’s console will go toe-to-toe with Sony’s Playstation 4 and Nintendo’s WiiU.
