The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: The death of the mastermind behind the 11 September attacks; gorse fires continue to rage in Donegal; and three viable devices are made safe in Kildare.

1. #BIN LADEN: Osma bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 11 September terrorist attacks, has been killed by American forces in the city of Abbottabad, Pakistan.

US President Barack Obama said that special forces tracked down the long-sought for terrorist about 30 miles north east of the country’s capital, Islamabad. Reports indicate that Bin Laden, his son, two couriers and a woman were also killed in the attack.

Crowds in New York have gathered at the scene where the twin Towers once stood to celebrate the death of Bin Laden. The news has been warmly welcomed by the international community, with Afghanistan’s President Karzai warning that the Taliban must learn lesson from the turn in events.

2. #DEVICES: Three viable devices discovered last night in Kildare have been made safe by Army Bomb Disposal experts. The devices were found on the Allenwood to Carbury road, RTÉ reports.

3. #CORPORATION TAX: President Mary McAleese has begun a two day official visit to the Netherlands, where she is expected to tell Dutch business leaders that Ireland will not be changing its corporation tax rate, the Irish Times reports.

4. #FIRES: The attempt to bring several raging gorse fires in Co Donegal under control continues this morning, with as many as 100 members of the Defence Forces and three helicopters beings deployed to stricken areas. A number of roads have been closed – see AA Roadwatch for details.

5. #JOHN PAUL II: Some 1.5 million pilgrims flooded Rome to watch Pope John Paul II move a step closer to sainthood in one of the largest Vatican Masses in history. The turnout for the beatification Sunday far exceeded even the most optimistic expectation of 1 million people, the number Rome city officials predicted, the Associated Press reports.

6. #OLDEST MAN: The man believed to be the oldest in Ireland has passed away at the age of 106.

Michael “Mick” Fitzsimons, from Knockategart, Stradone, Co Cavan, died on Saturday after previously being in “perfect health”, the Irish Times reports. Fitzsimons attributed his long life to “porridge and hard work”

7. LIBYA: In Libya, angry mobs attacked Western embassies and a UN office in Tripoli on Sunday after NATO bombed Muammar Gaddafi’s family compound in an attack,which officials said killed the leader’s second youngest son and three grandchildren, ages six months to two years, the AP reports.

8. #JAPAN: Japan has passed a 4 trillion yen (€33,167 billion) tsunami recovery budget today – however it is expected to cover just a fraction of the cost of what is the country’s most expensive disaster ever, Reuters reports.

9. #TWINS: US singer Mariah Carey has given birth to twins. The 42-year-old gave birth to a baby girl and boy in Los Angeles, reports the New York Daily News. Her husband Nick Cannon tweeted: “My wife just gave me the most incredible anniversary gift ever in life! I won’t ever be able to top this!”
