The 9 at 9 Nine things you really, really need to know by 9am: the Irish become savvy shoppers, the inquests into the July 7 bombings get underway, and the cars you don’t even need to be awake to drive.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie tells you nine things you really, really need to know with your morning coffee.

1. #POLL: A Red C/Irish Sun poll shows more people would trust the IMF or the EU to sort out our financial mess than would put their faith in Brian Lenihan. Almost a third are in favour of European Central Bank intervention, while 29 per cent would be happy to see the IMF stepping in…with just 28 per cent expressing confidence in the finance minister’s ability to get the economy back on track. However, there’s worse news for the opposition, with just 23 per cent having faith in Joan Burton and 21 per cent in Michael Noonan.

2. #DROWNING A former Mayo county footballer and a retired publican drowned off Inishboffin on Saturday after taking their dinghy out to their boat which was anchored in the harbour in calm waters.

3. #ROADS: Four people died in weekend road accidents – including a man who was killed after travelling the wrong way up the N7, reports the Irish Daily Star.

4. #RECESSIONOMICS: At last – something for which to be grateful to the recession. Irish consumers have been transformed from lazy and ill-informed shoppers, to frugal, savvy and happy-to-complain punters, a new study shows.

5. #POLITICS: A new grassroots political movement, Claiming Our Future, is to hold its first national meeting at the end of the month, according to the Irish Times. It’s supported by about 50 national groups including the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the National Women’s Council, the Disability Federation, the TASC think tank, Social Justice Ireland, the Community Platform and the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

6. #SLUDGE: Hungarian authorities are making provision to evacuate 3,000 people from their homes amidst warnings that the reservoir holding toxic sludge could collapse at any time.

7. #INQUEST: Inquests are due to begin this week into the deaths of 52 people in the 7 July bombings in London – some five years on.

8. #NAZI ROW: US Republican politician Rich Iott has been criticised after pictures of him dressed in a Nazi uniform appeared on the internet. He says he never meant to insult anyone – especially not the Jewish community. “Never, in any of my re-enacting of military history, have I meant any disrespect to anyone who served in our military or anyone who has been affected by the tragedy of war, especially the Jewish community,” he said. Hmm, you might want to rethink your choice of costume then, Rich.

9. #GOOGLE: In its ongoing quest for world domination, Google has been trying out self-driving cars which it plans to develop, well, just because it can. (Or maybe just because its GPS navigation systems mean it could track you wherever you go and feed you ads about products you might like to buy along the route.) The New York Times reports that seven test cars have travelled 1,000 miles without need for human intervention, and that they’ve covered more than 140,000 miles with the human chaperone stepping in only occasionally. One of the cars was even able to safely make its way down Lombard Street in San Francisco, the fabled “crookedest street in the world,” the Times says.
