1. #OBAMA: The US President begins his 24-hour visit to Ireland today, which will include an address to thousands on College Green in Dublin and a trip to the home of his ancestors in Moneygall, Co Offaly. The Taoiseach Enda Kenny will also brief Obama on Ireland’s economic situation and on the country’s bailout deal with the EU/IMF.

2. #INQUIRY: The findings of an inquiry into the murder of an prominent Catholic solicitor in Armagh in 1999 will be released today, RTÉ reports. Rosemary Nelson, a mother-of-three, was killed when a bomb attached to her car exploded near her home in Lurgan.

3. #CROKE PARK DEAL: The national body in charge of reviewing the Croke Park Agreement has been informed that more than €260 million has been saved in the health and local authorities sectors as a result of the deal, according to the Irish Times.

4. #HUMAN RIGHTS: The UN’s Committee Against Torture will question the Irish government about its human rights record in Geneva today and tomorrow: questions will revolve around prison conditions, the treatment of asylum seekers, children in detention and the treatment of women sent to the Magdalene laundries, reports the Irish Times.

5. #VOLCANO: There is a possibility that the plume of ash coming from Iceland’s most active volcano may drift over to Europe later in the week – however experts hope that it will have a limited impact on travellers, RTÉ reports.

6. #RYANAIR: The airline has announced a 26 per cent increase in annual profits to €401 million. Ryanair said that revenues increased 21 per cent to €3,630 million as traffic grew 8 per cent and average fares rose 12 per cent.

7. #USA: As many as 30 people are dead following a powerful tornado hitting the town of Joplin in Missouri, USA, Reuters reports.

8. #SUDAN: As fears of renewed civil war intensify, the UN has called for “immediate withdrawal” of Sudanese forces from disputed town of Abyei, Bloomberg reports. Southern Sudan has called the seizure of the town as an “act of war”.

9. #CANNES: Terrence Malick’s film The Tree of Life took home the Palme d’Or prize for best picture at the Cannes film festival last night, while the Best Actress award was given to US actress Kirsten Dunst for her performance in Melancholia. However the director of Melancholia, Lars von Trier, was barred from the night after describing himself as a Nazi – remarks he insisted were a joke, the BBC reports.
