1. #COURTS: The 37-year-old man charged in connection with the death of Galway schoolteacher and publican John Kenny last week has been refused bail. Judge Mary Fahy refused refused the request to grant bail to Romanian national Florin Fitzpatrick at a special sitting of the court yesterday afternoon, due to the seriousness of the charges against him.

2. #FIRE: Gardaí have launched an investigation following the death of a five-year-old girl in a house fire in Boyle, Co Roscommon, in the early hours of this morning. A man in his 40s and two other children aged three and four escaped from the house and are being treated at Sligo General Hospital.

3. #HOUSE PRICES: The Daft.ie house price report for the third quarter of the year shows that asking prices fell by an average of 3.5 per cent between June and September. In the second quarter the average price drop was 5 per cent.

4. #GREECE: Finance Minister Michael Noonan is travelling to Luxembourg today to discuss the eurozone debt crisis with other EU finance ministers. Yesterday, Greece released government draft budget figures which showed that it will miss its deficit targets – despite the austerity measures already adopted.

5. #TOSCAN DU PLANTIER: French detectives are due to arrive in Cork today to speak with 30 people interviewed in the original murder investigation of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork 15 years ago. Two French forensic scientists will also examine evidence collected at the time, RTÉ reports.

6. #AMANDA KNOX: Today the 24-year-old American will make her last attempt to persuade the Italian courts that she was not involved in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in 2007. Knox  has served four years in prison to date after being convicted of her former housemate’s killing – and faces the remainder of a 26-year-sentence if the jury decide to reject her appeal.

7. #MARKETS: Asian markets fell sharply in early trading today, compounding fears that investors are spooked following the publication of data suggesting that Greece’s attempts at austerity were not yielding desired results.

8. #TYPHOONS: Powerful storms continued to batter Asia over the weekend, with two back-to-back typhoons hitting the Philippines yesterday, killing 56 people, CBS reports.

9. #MALE MENOPAUSE: Scientists say that “male menopause” exists – and affects one in five men over aged over 50. Doctors at an international conference heard yesterday that testosterone deficiency can result in extreme tiredness, depression, weight gain, memory loss, sleep disturbance and loss of libido, the Daily Mail reports.

Researchers at Institute of Urology at University College Hospital, London - who undertook a 15-year study of 1,500 patients – insisted that testosterone treatment for the condition was not linked to a higher chance of developing prostate cancer.
