The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things you should know as you begin your day…

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you begin your day.

1. #MURDER: Two people remain in garda custody today following the discovery of the body of a 53-year-old man in a flat in Dublin’s Prussia Street yesterday. It is understood that the man was stabbed and that his body was concealed for a number of days at the location.

2. #RIP: A man in his early 20s has died following a single vehicle crash in Navan, Co Meath. The man was seriously injured when his motorbike crashed on the R165 at Cloughrea, Drumconrath. He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogehda, where he was later pronounced dead.

3. #ALPS KILLING: The investigation into the killing of four people in the French Alps has been expanded to include detectives in France, UK, Italy and Switzerland – and is expected to be “long and complex”. Investigators are reportedly keen to interview one of the survivors, seven-year-old Zainab al-Hilli who is currently in a medically-induced coma, after ruling out the possibility of getting meaningful information from her four-year-old sister Zeena, reports News.com.au.

4. #TROIKA: An IMF report due to be published tomorrow shows that Ireland’s bailout troika is pushing for reform to universal social welfare payments and for a speed-up in progress on introducing a property tax, according to the Sunday Business Post. The report deems payments such as child benefit as financially unsustainable, and also highlights the need for the issue of health service reforms to be addressed.

5. #BANTRY: Gardaí have suspended questioning of a man in connection with the discovery of the body of another man in Bantry, Co Cork, on Friday. The man who was being questioned, who is aged in his 70s, is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital, reports RTÉ.

6. #THALIDOMIDE: Following increasing pressure from the Irish Thalidomide Association on the government to deliver on its commitment to provide for victims, the Minister for Health James Reilly has said compensation will be offered in the form of an ex-gratia payment. Reilly insisted that the State does not bear legal liability but that a non-statutory package can be created to meet victims’ health needs, reports Newstalk.

7. #SYRIA: The humanitarian crisis in Syria has worsened after the destruction of a main water pipe in the city of Aleppo during violent clashes - leaving several parts of the city without access to clean drinking water. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has voiced pessimism over the prospect of coming to an agreement with Russia regarding the ongoing crisis in Syria.

8. #IRAQ: At least 18 people have been killed in attacks targeting security forces in Baghdad, with 11 being killed in one incident and several other killed in other bomb attacks, reports the BBC.

9. #BARGAIN: A painting thought to be an original Renoir has been bought by a woman in a Virginia flea market for under $50.

The artwork, believed to be the master painter’s Paysage Bords De Seine, is now expected to fetch more than $100,000 at auction.

That’s something to keep in mind the next time you’re rifling through boxes of junk at a market.
