The 9 at 9 Nine things you really need to know by 9am: cystic fibrosis unit finally in sight, Ireland’s embarrassingly large ecological footprint..and who was waiting to greet the miner with a wife and a mistress.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really, really need to know with your morning coffee.

1. #CHILE: They’re all out. All 33 Chilean miners emerged safely from their 70 day ordeal, in remarkably good condition. The men all need dental care and treatment for a fungal skin infection, and just one is suffering a mild case of pneumonia. At the end Chilean president Sebastian Pinera put a manhole cover on the mine, signalling an end to the ordeal.

2. #TALKS: In a remarkable turnaround, Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said he will put his four year plan to Opposition; Fine Gael says it will repsond positively.

3. #CYSTIC FIBROSIS: The long-awaited cystic fibrosis unit is to be completed by 2012.

4. #ROADS: The family of a four-year-old child who was killed by an uninsured, disqualified driver is calling for tougher measures on disqualified drivers, after the man responsible was given a four month sentence – one month for every year of their child’s life.

5. #SHINE: Health Minister Mary Harney has said there will be no inquiry into the abuse of former doctor Michael Shine’s patients, leading the group Dignity4Patients to accuse her of ‘re- abusing’ victims.

6. #CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL: Property developer Noel Smyth says he met Philip Lynch, the chief of the proposed children’s hospital who resigned last week, to discuss possibly moving to the hospital to a new site. Smyth says his offer to build the hospital at cost at a donated site near Newlands cross for €150 million less than it would cost at the Mater site still stands.

7. #ENVIRONMENT: Ireland has the world’s tenth largest ecological footprint, with one of the worst records of excessive human consumption of natural resources, according to a Living Planet report.

8. #UH-OH: The country is suffering a dire shortage of… uilleann pipe makers.

9. #CHILE:  It’s the question that’s been on the whole world’s lips. (Admit it, it has, hasn’t it?) Who was waiting to greet Yonni Barrios, the 21st miner to be released, and the man who became famous when his wife met his mistress at a vigil outside the mine? Barrios emerged from the mine to be greeted by … his mistress, Susana Valenzuela. His wife, Marta Salinas opted not to attend the rescue. “I am happy because he made it, it’s a miracle of God,” she told the Daily Mail. “But I won’t attend the rescue.”
