1. #FIRE: Emergency services are continuing to battle a fire at the Panda recycling plant at the Beaupark Business Park outside Slane in Co Meath today, after it broke out at about 11.30pm last night.

RTÉ is reporting that eight units of the fire brigade are at the scene and that there is a large quantity of combustible material at the site.

2. #WALLACE: It is expected that independent TD Mick Wallace will be allowed to make a personal statement in the Dáil before midday today, providing a recommendation made by party whips is approved by the Government. The Wexford TD has come under fire in recent days after it emerged that his company, M&J Wallace, had under-declared tax by about €1.4 million. Wallace later reached a €2.13 million settlement agreement with Revenue.

3. #RAIN: Met Éireann has warned of heavy and persistent rain hitting the country later today, which may lead to flooding in some areas. Gale force winds are also expected along exposed coasts.

4. #SYRIA: A new report by Amnesty International has revealed a “shocking escalation in unlawful killings, torture, arbitrary detention and war crimes” in Syria. Workers on the ground were recently able to access areas of Aleppo and Idlib, and say they heard testimonies from grieving families “in every town and village” who reported soldiers and shabiha militias shooting dead civilians, setting bodies on fire and torturing detainees.

5. #LEVESON: The British Prime Minister David Cameron is to face an uncomfortable appearance before Britain’s press-ethics inquiry later today, with the focus of questioning expected to centre on his links to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire – and specifically on his relationships with Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson.

6. #SUU KYI: Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has arrived in Geneva for the start of her two-week European tour. The pro-democracy politician is scheduled to address the United Nations’ International Labour Organisation on the issue of child and slave labour in Burma.

Suu Kyi, who has been prevented from visiting Europe since 1988, will arrive in Ireland on Monday.

7. #CYPRUS: Credit ratings agency Moody’s has downgraded Cyprus by two notches over fears that  Greece will leave the eurozone, the AP reports. Yesterday, Moody’s downgraded Spain to just one notch above “junk” status – forcing the cost of borrowing to rise to record levels for the country.

8. #NOKIA: Telecommunications giant Nokia has announced it is to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide – bringing on the closure of the company’s only plant in Finland. The company says it plans to book additional restructuring charges of around $1 billion by the end of next year, Reuters reports.

9. #BLOOMSDAY: Ahead of Bloomsday, travel writer and broadcaster Manchán Magan went to Paris on the trail of author James Joyce – and uncovered some surprising things about the great Irish writer’s time there
