GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things you want to know as you start your day.

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #TRAGEDY: Gardaí are appealing for information about the whereabouts of a green Ford Focus between the hours of 6.30 pm (Sunday evening) and 3.30pm (Monday afternoon) following the deaths of two young Carlow brothers. Eoghan Chada, 10, and Ruairí Chada, five, were found dead, and their father injured, following a car crash at Cloneen, Rosbeg, yesterday.

2. #MURDER: An Australian martial arts enthusiast who has pleaded guilty to the killing of 30-year-old Dublin man David Greene in Melbourne last year appeared in court this morning for a pre-sentence hearing. David’s mother, Catherine, said their family’s lives had been turned upside-down by his death.

3. #BRIBE CLAIM: The Oireachtas authorities have received a complaint from a member of the public over claims by Labour senator Denis Landy that he was offered a trip abroad to coincide with a vote on the referendum to abolish the Seanad. Landy told the Irish Independent he was offered a holiday in New York to coincide with a series of votes which, he claimed, was an attempt to see the government’s proposal defeated.

4. #BUDGET: The Irish Exporters Association has urged the Minister for Finance to make October’s upcoming Budget the final to impose austerity measures, saying such a move would “allow for future planning and will give confidence to investors”, RTÉ News reports.

5. #ITALY: A day of mourning has been declared in Italy today, as mass funerals take place for the victims of last weekend’s bus crash. Thirty-eight people died when a coach plunged off a viaduct near Naples on Sunday.

6. #WIKILEAKS: A verdict is expected today in the military trial of US soldier Bradley Manning who is accused of giving thousands of classified documents to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. The 25-year-old has spent the past three years in custody.

7. #FLORIDA: All workers of a Florida propane plant have been accounted for this morning, after a series of massive explosions ripped the roof off the building last night. Seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals.

8. #JAILBREAK: Taliban militants disguised as local police freed 250 prisoners from a Pakistani jail overnight, including dozens of militants described as “dangerous terrorists”. The militants, armed with guns and grenades, killed six policemen and six Shia Muslim inmates, the Guardian reports.

9. #PEARLY WHITES: Scientists have grown rudimentary teeth out of human urine (yes, you read that correctly). The team from China showed that urine can be used as a source of stem cells, which in turn can be used to replace teeth lost though age or poor dental hygiene.
